Having spent twenty-five plus years working with people in a range of settings I have come to believe that good communication is at the heart of every piece of work I undertake. By this I refer not to listening and communication skills but to the art of really connecting with those I work with on a much deeper level. This relates to respecting opinions, enjoying the challenges of difference and truly valuing everything that others bring into a working relationship.

My working style is based on openness and honesty, balancing opinions and a pragmatic, practical approach to complex situations. I have a reputation for unraveling and adding clarity to the multi-dimensional, continually changing workplace social workers find themselves within. My desire is to seek solutions that will improve social work services not only for service users, social workers, providers but also for society as a whole.

I judge my teaching ability, not by levels of academic achievement, but rather by watching students grasp complicated theories and models of working in such a way that learning becomes an exciting adventure. The process of linking formal learning with practice can sometimes be feared by students. I take great pleasure in removing those anxieties through proposing a realistic outlook which allows students to seek ways of bridging that gap between theory and practice.

Professional ProfileI have been working as a freelance lecturer and practice assessor since leaving the University of Reading in late 2008. Recent, larger scale projects include delivering social work related modules at PQ Higher Specialist award and masters level for the University of Reading, supporting the delivery of a distance learning masters level module in Health and Social Care at Oxford Brookes University and preparing for the delivery of some specialist Childhood Sociology teaching at the University of Surrey.

I have a particular interest in the codes of practice and the ethical frameworks which social workers engage with. This underpins much of my work and explains my enthusiasm about joining the BASW Policy, Ethics and Human Rights Committee. My research has primarily focused on the experiences of disabled children of social welfare services. I have also been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work within a project, supported by the British Council, assisting colleagues from two Jordanian Universities establish social work as a profession within Jordan (from 2006-2008).

I have worked in a number of roles, ranging from University Lecturer, Learning and Development consultant in a Local authority, Social Worker in both statutory and voluntary settings, practice teacher and practice assessor.
